I am not happy with this car after two years of using it. Although it hasn't given me serious problems but Volvo is a new brand that is trying to enter an unknown market, in India. Volvo V40 Cross Country is a good choice for me as I would love to use diesel engine cars, I would recommend it as most economical car with 1.6 liter D3 version returning 74.3 mpg along with emitting 99 g/ km of CO2 usable by free road tax and low benefit in kind tax for drivers. Read More »

Volvo V40 Cross Country Overview

The ecstatic and sporty appearing large hatch Volvo V40 Cross Country is an answer to BMW 1-series and Audi A3 Sportsback.
Volvo V40 Cross Country Exterior
Undoubtedly Volvo V40 looks enchanting and dramatic at the first glance. It has got aggressive headlights and a generously long protruding bonnet and a sharply raked windscreen.
Enhancing the sporty nature the small roof rails at the top flows seamlessly to the beautifully fashioned posteriors. A lot of plastic cladding can be seen on the bumpers both at the rear and the front and on the side skirts that help save the panel from hitting whenever it goes off the asphalt. The ground clearance is enhanced by 40 mm and larger tires than the Volvo V40 hatch.
The built quality at the exteriors is good and it's nice to see consistent gaps all around but it is not better than the German counterparts.

If you are attracted to V40 by company's reputation for comfortable, safe and practical transport, you will be quite impressed to see what you have found all in Volvo V40. Passenger accommodation is as liberal as the most practical of hatchbacks in vogue today.
There is terrific support for your back and thighs while there plenty of space for utilities. The cabin is not as ostentatious as the exteriors; however, the design elements are lot more restrained. It is plain with minimal detailing all which have been adorned in black and dull looking aluminum. But the center console and sculpted door-pads does give you upmarket feel.
The comfort and convenient aspects can definitely bowl over the customers. There is an AC unit with heater and clean air filtering technology, leather heated seats, a digital instrument cluster that provides few notifications and warnings while driving and an inbuilt TFT display panel of 8 inches that can be used to customize three different modes Economy, Elegance and Performance.
Volvo V40 Cross Country Engine & Transmission
In Indian market, Volvo V40 is currently available in sole 2.0L diesel variant but soon it could be joined by a petrol variant. The turbocharged diesel mill is quite powerful and highly acclaimed. The 1984cc displacement engine is capable of producing impressive 150 bhp of generous power and maximum torque of 350 Nm.
The engine is en-suited to a 6-speed automatic transmission system which ensures smooth shifts at most of the time. In addition, the power steering adequately comes at rescue.
Volvo V40 Cross Country Mileage
Currently the car is available in the sole diesel variant in India. The 2.0L turbocharged diesel mill which has impressive power and torque, is capable of returning mileage of 16.81kmpl as per the ARAI certification which is considered decent for the jam packed Indian traffic conditions.
The mileage is decent but not the excellent. It can easily stand shoulder to shoulder to BMW X1 and Audi Q3.
Volvo V40 Cross Country Braking and Safety
Since the car competes with the best in class vehicles in the segment, it has been equipped with blend of luxuriant driving and efficient braking system. It comes loaded with McPherson spring strut while the rear axle has been mounted with multi-link mechanism. The brakes and steering is enjoyable enough and infuse a lot of confidence. The Anti-lock braking system is supported by hydraulic brake assist along with ready alert brakes ensures maximum control of the car.
Swedish cars are designed for maximum safety and Volvo V40 keeps the tradition going. In Euro NCAP ratings, the car received five star ratings which is the highest in the segment. So mentioning the rivals here is negligible. As per the safety of the occupants, the car comes with horde of features. Just to mention a few it boasts of hill decent control with traction control, dual stage airbags, side airbags, passenger airbag deactivation switch, pedestrian airbag which is first of its kind safety feature besides remote central locking and engine immobilizer, etc.
Volvo V40 Cross Country Performance and Handling
Unlike some of the other modern diesel offerings, the 2.0L motor is very responsive and quick off the mark. One would not experience any turbo lag or delay in transmission where the six-speed gearbox reacts instantly as soon as we press the accelerator. What is more satisfying is the linearity of the car while moving. But the car seems to be idle at low revs and this typically occurs at the street corners.
The performance figure sings its own songs. The car rushes to 100 kmph mark from standstill in just 8.6 seconds of time and can leaps forward effortlessly at high speeds. Overall the performance is more than sufficient while the suspension level is sensibly pliant.
What do we think about Volvo V40 Cross Country?
The Volvo V40 cross country isn't made for everyone. It does possess the masculine appeal of an SUV but the 2WD version isn't enough to allure the pure off-roader. Its design is different from the contemporary vehicles and that's what it makes it stand out in the crowd.
The car is certainly an unconventional car that has comes through the shackles of 'safety' chains. It shows bunch of potential by ticking a lot of right boxes that could surely appeal the young buyers. Rest the company need to strengthen the sales and service network to catch up the segment.
Volvo V40 Cross Country Competitors
The Gottenberg based manufacturer is not expecting any wonders from the car. It is also well aware of the fact that this car can only allure those who want luxury, style and safety in a single compact package.
Volvo is also aiming to turn the tide in family hatchback cum crossover class and currently competes with Audi A3 Sportsback, BMW 1-series and Audi Q3. It sets itself apart by its tasteful cabin, quirky design and graceful exteriors. But looking to these four in the field, BMW stands at the top with large boot and engaging driving experience.
